52-year- old drinks poison, jumps into Lagos river

Residents of Salvation Avenue in the Ajegunle, Ikorodu area of Lagos State have found the corpse of a man by the riverside.

It was learnt that the deceased, Bolaji Waheed, was found around 1.30pm at the bank of the Itowolo River with a bottle containing a substance suspected to be poison.

Our correspondent gathered that 52-year-old Waheed had been declared missing on Saturday after his family members could not find him.

It was learnt that Waheed’s dead body was found by the riverside on Monday, which caused confusion in the area.

UNILORIN Confirms The Withdrawal Of A "Born Again" Student Over Malpractice In WASSCE

The management of University of Ilorin, Kwara State (UNILORIN) has released official statement concerning the voluntary withdrawal of one of its student named Jephtaph Abolarin.

The 300-Level Sociology student was said to have written a letter to the school authorities informing them that he will no longer be able to continue his studies in the institution due to the fact that the WAEC certificate with which he gained admission into the institution was obtained through malpractice and going by the fact that he is now "born again", it will be unjust and immoral for him to continue his education using an unmerited certificate.

The University authorities has confirmed this and acknowledged receiving the letter.

According to the university's Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter. He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

Jilted 19-year-old student commits suicide

Jessica Beer, a 19-year-old female student of Dyege Memorial College, Akpehe, Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday committed suicide after her boyfriend, identified simply as Labi, impregnated another girl and subsequently dumped her.

A close friend of the victim, who did not want her name mentioned, told our correspondent that Beer killed herself because she loved Labi and could not accept that she had been jilted.

The friend further said her late friend believed that after impregnating another girl, her future plans with Labi was in jeopardy.

The source said when she went to Beer’s residence, she met the victim on the floor, vomiting blood.

She said, “My friend had brought a sharp knife the day before the incident to my house. She said I should follow her to her boyfriend’s house, threatening to deal with him. But I advised her not to take the law into her own hands.

“When I went to see her the next day, I met Jessica (Beer) on the floor, vomiting blood and I quickly raised the alarm.”

It was gathered that the victim was rushed to a private hospital, Yiman Hospital, in the area, where doctors certified her dead.

The Chief Nurse at the hospital, Mrs. Atser Terkimbi, told our correspondent that when the victim was brought to the hospital, she was foaming at the mouth as a result of the substance she took, which later claimed her life.

Some weeks ago, an online lynch mob went for the head of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, after he had shared his opinions on marriage at a ministers’ conference in his church. Adeboye, in reality, did not say anything dissimilar to what most parental figures of his generation would have if asked to comment in a similar situation. The triviality of his suggestions, however, did not stem the flow of outrage against him. For one, Adeboye is a public figure and a rather influential one whose opinion on every issue matters because they are not confined to the precinct of his church.

While I do not see much value in the manner the man was virulently castigated for holding on to his traditional cultural values, I however think the cleric needs to be told by those around him that the times are changing and his sermons need to be updated to reflect the reality of the real world people now live in. An insistence on rigid gender roles even as the ground beneath our feet is shifting is one of the ways the society holds back everyone, male and female. No gender was born to perform domesticity and none is inherently enterprising either, these are values taught by the society.

Mother solicited men to rape 10-year-old daughter

The mother of a 10-year-old girl killed last month in a gruesome crime that shocked the United States told police that she had solicited men to rape her daughter, according to reports.

Victoria Martens’ dismembered body was found in her home in the western state of New Mexico in August after police were called to the scene.

Officials said that Martens, who was killed hours before her 10th birthday party, had been given methamphetamine and was sexually assaulted, stabbed, strangled and dismembered.

Her mother Michelle Martens, Fabian Gonzales as well as Gonzales’s cousin, Jessica Kelley, have been charged in connection with her murder.

During the week, star actress, Rita Dominic, had a Facebook live chat with her fans where she addressed various issues about her life ranging from her career to her love life. Interestingly, the actress who hardly speaks about her relationship told her fans that she was formerly in a relationship with someone in Germany. She also added that she loves babies and is working toward making one. With that, people got talking but what made tongues wag the most was when she posted the picture of Ayoola, the 2012 Project Fame winner, on her Instagram page.

Singer Madonna and her ex-husband, Director Guy Ritchie, have settled a custody dispute over their 16-year-old son Rocco, a court official in New York said.

It was not immediately announced with which parent the teenager would live.

Madonna, 58, and Ritchie, 47, had been in a legal battle over their son since December when the teenager ignored a court order to fly back from Ritchie’s London home to live with his mother in New York.

The “Material Girl” singer, who concluded her worldwide “Rebel Heart” tour in March, and Ritchie, director of 2009 film “Sherlock Holmes,” married in 2000.

Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, said she was using her $15m, which was frozen in four companies’ accounts, to settle medical bills while she was out of the country.

She, therefore, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Skye Bank to lift the restriction on the accounts.

Patience said this in a letter with reference number GA/Abibo/00226/2016, written by her lawyers, Granville Abibo (SAN) and Co, which was addressed to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

It had reported that the four accounts belonged to the following companies: Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited.

A houseboy, a driver and other domestic workers of a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to Jonathan, Waripamowei Dudafa, were named as directors, but Patience’s $15m was lodged in the accounts and she was given a platinum card and exclusive access to the accounts.

An 80-year-old man, Godwin Oyia, lost his life in Lagos, after being trapped in an House inferno started by an immersion water heater (boiling ring). The fire incident occured at No 5 Aborishade close, Lawanson, Surulere, at about 10:40am today, Sept 13th.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), investigation carried out by the Agency's emergency response team at the scene of the incident revealed that an immersion water heater (boiling ring) being used at the last room on the top floor, led to the outbreak of fire that engulfed the whole building. Unfortunately, the aged man, Godwin Oyia, was burnt to death in the room where the fire started from.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, in his Eid-el-Kabir message on Monday said armed herdsmen perpetrating violence in the country were foreign terrorists.

ASUU Warns Of Imminent Crisis, Kicks Against The Scrapping Of Post-UTME

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that the nation’s universities may soon experience crisis if the federal government fails to begin the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, especially the NEEDS assessment agreement.

The Union equally demanded that the federal government reverse the ban on post-UTME as well as the exclusive right granted to JAMB to admit students into tertiary institutions.

The ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi made this known while addressing new men yesterday in Abuja. 

According to him, the scrapping of Post-UTME and the position of the Federal government on the issue portends serious danger for the quality of education in this country.

He emphasized that since the introduction of Post-UTME, there has been improvement in the quality of students admitted into the universities as evident in the declining drop-out rate and urged the federal government to reconsider its decision and convene a stakeholders meeting before making any policy.
