Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is under pressure to drop Wayne Rooney, with the captain’s clanking performances emblematic of the team’s struggles.

United have lost their last three matches and there is clamour among supporters and journalists for Rooney to be removed from the starting XI.

In an online poll by the United fanzine Red Issue, over 99 percent of respondents called for him to be axed.

“Where do you want Wayne Rooney to play? Or should he be playing at all?” former England captain Alan Shearer wrote in The Sun after United’s 3-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday.

Mikel prepares for life after Chelsea

John Obi Mikel has said he is making plans for life after Chelsea as time ticks down on the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel, who has made more than 350 appearances in all competitions since joining Chelsea from Lyn Oslo in June 2006, told Goal he will talk to interested clubs in January if he is not offered an extension.

The Nigeria international is the club’s longest-serving player behind John Terry and has won every major club trophy at Stamford Bridge.

But he has only infrequently been a regular starter at Chelsea, regaining a level of prominence under interim manager Guus Hiddink last season before falling back down the pecking order following the arrivals of new coach Antonio Conteand N’Golo Kante.

Babalola donates N10m to Nigeria Olympic Fund

Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, on Monday announced a donation of N10m to the Nigeria Olympic Fund to support the growth of sports in the country.

Babalola made the donation in Ado Ekiti after endorsing the Nigeria Olympic Fund, an initiative of former Nigerian internationals, to raise funds to support the Nigerian team to the Olympics.

He called on corporate bodies and individuals to contribute to sports funding in Nigeria, saying the dismal performance of Team Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the dwindling fortunes of sports in the country was worrisome.

UNILORIN Confirms The Withdrawal Of A "Born Again" Student Over Malpractice In WASSCE

The management of University of Ilorin, Kwara State (UNILORIN) has released official statement concerning the voluntary withdrawal of one of its student named Jephtaph Abolarin.

The 300-Level Sociology student was said to have written a letter to the school authorities informing them that he will no longer be able to continue his studies in the institution due to the fact that the WAEC certificate with which he gained admission into the institution was obtained through malpractice and going by the fact that he is now "born again", it will be unjust and immoral for him to continue his education using an unmerited certificate.

The University authorities has confirmed this and acknowledged receiving the letter.

According to the university's Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter. He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

Amosun, Dickson want Ojude Oba listed as global festival

Governors of Ogun Bayelsa and Kaduna states, Ibikunle Amosun, Seriake Dickson and Nasir el-Rufai, respectively have rated the annual Ojude Oba festival in Ijebuland, as a world-class cultural and historical festival that should be listed on the global tourism calendar.

They spoke on Wednesday at the celebration of the event, which holds every third day after the yearly Eid-el-Kabir festival.

Amosun said the cultural festival had become a rallying point for not only the sons and daughters of Ijebuland, but the whole country.

Iheanacho scores in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Moenchengladbach

Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City outclassed Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0 in their rearranged Champions League opener at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Nigerian international sealed the victory at the death with  a simple tap-in.

The game had been carried over from Tuesday due to a thunderstorm and Aguero made up for lost time with his second treble of the campaign after his hat-trick against Steaua Bucharest in the play-off round.

Aguero, currently serving a domestic ban, struck twice in the first half and once in the second before giving way to Kelechi Iheanacho, who netted City’s fourth.

Jilted 19-year-old student commits suicide

Jessica Beer, a 19-year-old female student of Dyege Memorial College, Akpehe, Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday committed suicide after her boyfriend, identified simply as Labi, impregnated another girl and subsequently dumped her.

A close friend of the victim, who did not want her name mentioned, told our correspondent that Beer killed herself because she loved Labi and could not accept that she had been jilted.

The friend further said her late friend believed that after impregnating another girl, her future plans with Labi was in jeopardy.

The source said when she went to Beer’s residence, she met the victim on the floor, vomiting blood.

She said, “My friend had brought a sharp knife the day before the incident to my house. She said I should follow her to her boyfriend’s house, threatening to deal with him. But I advised her not to take the law into her own hands.

“When I went to see her the next day, I met Jessica (Beer) on the floor, vomiting blood and I quickly raised the alarm.”

It was gathered that the victim was rushed to a private hospital, Yiman Hospital, in the area, where doctors certified her dead.

The Chief Nurse at the hospital, Mrs. Atser Terkimbi, told our correspondent that when the victim was brought to the hospital, she was foaming at the mouth as a result of the substance she took, which later claimed her life.

It’s wicked to owe workers in recession — Obiano

The Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has said that it is a sin for any employer of labour particularly government to owe workers salaries in a time of recession the country is in now.

Obiano said this during the commencement of the  Anambra State Fire and Safety Summit in Awka on Wednesday.

 He said payment of workers’ salaries would energise the economy in a recession and make life more meaningful for the people.

 The governor, who expressed fear that the dollar would continue to rise against the naira, said it would take no fewer than 18 months for the economic downturn in the country to subside.

He said, “A state that does not pay its workers is inviting calamity. Payment of workers’ salaries energises the economy.

“We saw this recession early and made agriculture one of the pillars of our administration.

ASUU Denies Threatening To Embark On Strike

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Abuja’s chapter has denied the earlier publication that ASUU will be going on a warning strike by 2nd of October.

According to him, he did not grant interview to any journalist in that regard.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the National Youth Service Corps members of Igbo extraction to tell their colleagues that there is no hope of having a sovereign ‘Biafran State’.

Buhari said this when over 100 corps members serving in Katsina State came to visit him at his Daura residence on Tuesday.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, said the President urged the corps members to do everything to ensure the unity of Nigeria.

Speaking specifically to corps members from the south-eastern states, the President said, “Tell your colleagues who want Biafra to forget about it.”

The President said as a young soldier during the Civil War between 1967 and 1970, he fought hard to ensure the unity of the nation.

He, therefore, maintained that Nigeria would never disintegrate under his watch.
