Fast-rising Fuji star, Mudashiru Ajani,
popularly known as Safejo Amama, has said that against widespread
belief, musicians who sing the genre are not miscreants.
The artiste, who recently returned to
Nigeria after a long sojourn in the United States of America where he
had been promoting his music and brand to the international community,
told Saturday Beats in a recent chat that as a young ambassador
of the genre, he was committed to changing the perception a lot of
persons have about Fuji singers being hooligans and never-do-wells in
the society.
He said, “There is a lot of wrong
perception about Fuji artistes, it is time to change all of that. I want
to state categorically that Fuji musicians are as responsible and
law-abiding as their counterparts who are into other genres. Alhaji
Alabi Pasuma, my humble self and many others are enough examples to
prove to anybody that such gross categorisation is not true.
“As a person, I have discovered that
dressing decently and
addressing people politely are one of the ways to
portray a good image about one’s self. I do not joke with this because I
don’t want the world to perceive me wrongly.”
Safejo, who recently became a US citizen
and is set to release a new album, which features Pasuma prominently,
said Fuji music, being one of the most unique indigenous sounds, will
continue to remain relevant in most parts of Nigeria and beyond
regardless of the stiff competition from hip hop, dancehall and
Afrobeat.
“Fuji music is unique and can be enjoyed
by people from all languages. This sound of music, which is one of the
most unique in Nigeria, has existed for several years and shall continue
to remain because new innovations keep coming into it by the day. My
new album, which is set to hit the market any moment from now, would
prove to a lot of people that Fuji music is well and alive,” he said.
The young artiste, who is known to wear
two wristwatches at the same time, revealed that he was looking forward
to collaborations with hip hop acts – Olamide and Davido in the coming
months.
